The Folk Art Center at Dills Tavern is a
learning center that offers traditional handcraft and folk art classes
to children, adults and families.
Ukrainian Eggs (Pysanky)
Saturday April 9 from 10-3pm

You will learn to decorate a real egg with beautiful and ornate
designs. The pattern our teacher has chosen is ideal for beginners.
You will use a kiska (wax funnel) to apply a wax resist to your egg
before dipping it into a series of dyes. The many intense colors and
detailed patterns make these eggs just gorgeous.
Scherenschnitte (paper cutting)
Saturday April 30 from 10-3pm

The wonderful old-world craft of paper cutting will be introduced to
students. You will choose from a variety of seasonal motifs. See
what a lovely piece of art can be created out of paper and scissors.
We will be framing this project when completed.
Locks to Loom

Spring is the time for lambing and sheep shearing. Come join us as
we travel to Mary Baker's farm to watch sheep being sheared, and get
a look at this year’s spring lambs. Back at our own barn, you will
get to participate in the age old crafts of spinning and weaving
wool. This is a family class where parents and their children work
on projects together. The Locks to Loom Class walks your family
through the process of wool washing, dying, carding, spinning and
weaving. You will go home with a lovely woven mat of hand spun wool.
Class size is limited so please sign up early. Two classes will be
offered so choose the time you prefer. On our first class we will be
traveling to Mary Baker's farm. Please arrive promptly at the Maple
shades Barn so we can caravan to the farm.
Beginning Spinning
Saturday June 25 from 10-4pm

If you have ever wanted to learn how to spin wool on a spinning
wheel and make your own yarn this is your chance. Spinning classes
will cover wool preparation, combing and carding, spinning wool, and
plying. We will discuss selecting types of wool for your future
projects. With plenty of individualized attention this class will
get you well underway to becoming a proficient spinner.
Soap Making

Make your own soap from scratch. Your instructor will take you through
the steps of traditional soap making. The use of rendered fat and lye to
make a cleaning agent has been around for centuries. Come, enjoy
learning how to make your own specialty soaps by adding essential oils
and botanicals.
Floor Cloth

Floor clothes were used in many
colonial homes as practical and decorative floor coverings. They
were both easy to clean and durable. We will enjoy making our own
floor cloth with traditional diamond shapes or stencil decorations.
Each cloth will be approximately 2' x 3'. You will get to choose
from the patterns our teacher provide and select your color
preference. Please choose one or two from the list below:

Wheat weaving is a wonderful old folk
craft. It has traditions in Sweden, England, and many European
countries which of course these people then brought with them to the
New World. These decorations were hung over windows and in barns as
a good luck charm.
Wheat straw is
plated and twisted to create interesting shapes and
designs. Our instructor will work with you on completing two beginning
level pieces. We will be weaving a wreath ornament and a heart
decoration. Make sure you
register early so the teacher will be able to order supplies.

Theorem Painting

Theorem paintings are beautifully
stenciled images, many on off-white cotton velvet. This art-form was
practiced in the states from the late 1700's to the mid 1800's. It
was taught to girls at young-ladies academies. Many of the most
popular subjects were floral bouquets, baskets of flowers, fruit
compositions, birds and butterflies.
Come learn this elegant art-form. No
previous painting experience required.
Wheat Weaving 2

Saturday August 20 from 9-12 noon
Ages 13 - adult

Prerequisite: Wheat Weaving 1

This class will pick up where the
first class left off. We will be doing two new projects, one
of which is a house blessing. Please bring cleaned wheat ready to
soak. If you need to purchase more wheat, please contact Bekka

Basketweaving
Saturday August 27 from 10-3pm

During this class individuals will weave an 8" melon
basket. Melon baskets are beautiful rounded-bottom baskets
that use a rib structure. The course will teach you how to
construct a basket from scratch, teaching you how to weave a 'gods
eye', cut and size ribs and weave flat weavers to complete this
basket..
Fraktur (PA
German watercolor and calligraphy)

The Pennsylvania Dutch (German) created an
art-form called Fraktur or broken lettering. The art work often
accompanied writings that were done in calligraphy or broken
lettering. The pieces were made as certificates for special events,
house blessings, and decorations. Many familiar folk motifs are used
such as hearts, birds, tulips, and angels. We will be working on a
house blessing for you to display in your home. All ability levels
are welcome as we will be tracing our patterns.

Penny Rug

Penny rugs are small decorative rugs
for table-tops. These rugs are made from felted wool material and
various designs are appliquéd to its surface. You will enjoy sewing
these fun, folksy projects.
Holiday Handcrafts
Tin-Punch Angel
Saturday November 5 from 10-2pm

We will be cutting, punching, and
forming tin to make a lovely Christmas decoration. These angels can
be used to top your Christmas tree or set on a counter. Lights from
your tree or a candle will shine beautifully through the punched
holes of your angel.
Christmas Scherenschnitte

Pennsylvania Dutch paper cutting is
known as Scherenschnitte. It was a very popular hand craft in the
United States through the 1800's. Come find out more interesting
facts about this wonderful art form. We will be working on a
Christmas themed Scherenschnitte.
Wooly Santa
Saturday November 19 from 10-3pm

Our wooly Santa's are fun folksy
holiday decorations. Enjoy working with wool roving, felted wool
fabric, and curly wool locks. Santa's face is needle felted along
with his wooly beard. Needle felting is great fun to learn and can
be used to decorate many different craft projects.
Preregistration Required
To register
for any class print a copy of the
registration form. Class sizes may be small so please get your
registration in along with a $30 deposit. The deposit will secure
your place in class. Send your deposit to: Cheryl Heck, 1469 South

If the class is
full or cancelled your deposit will be returned to you in full. The
balance of the course fee is due the first day of the class.
